In 1914 he led the victorious battle at the river Marne. In 1916 he led the Somme-offensive and became chief-of-generals in 1917. In 1918 He became Commander-in-chief of the joint Allied army at the western front. In March 1918 he was victorious and forced the Germans to retreat. Later he dictated the conditions of surrender for the two German politicians in his railway carriage at Compiégne in the northern France.
